Catalytic converter heat shield
Good morning all
I wonder if anyone can help me , I was carrying out a service on my 2018 1.6 petrol vitara yesterday and noticed the cat heat shield moves around a bit on its mountings , the bolts are tight holding it on and it doesn't rattle , the mounting holes have what I would describe as wire mesh inserts in , I was wondering if any one else has noticed this movement or are my fixings worn ? Cars Done approx 33000 miles , maybe it's to allow for expansion or to stop fracturing but seems a lot of movement .

Re: Catalytic converter heat shield
mine had the same issue, i ended up flattening the edges over of 2 large washers, cutting a couple of slots in the heat shield and fitting the flattened parts of the washers into the slots and fastening them in with the original bolts. will try and post a pic later if i get chance..

Thanks for that Hutchy , that would be great if you could , did yours start to rattle? Mine seems to be quiet at moment but will get worse for sure

They all move, that's how they're designed.

Re: Catalytic converter heat shield
As above they are designed to have movement for heat expansion and any attempt to solid mount the shield may create future issues
In the previous SX4/Sedici the heatshield on the M16A was a solid mounted tin plate that is 9/10 times either broken off or has cracks from heat expansion and no movement/flexibility in the fixings

Re: Catalytic converter heat shield
i did this mod around February 2020 because i was sick of the rattle, so it was a case of do what i did or remove the shield of altogether, like the metal bands used on the lower front exhaust pipe heat shields, i have replaced every one of those.first i used those ties that can be used on the heat shield wrap material, but they don,t last long neither so used cv boot clips instead...

Re: Catalytic converter heat shield
These are what I have been using when the lower heat shield bands corrode...
