Timing belt Empty Timing belt

Post by JohnA on Tue Aug 04, 2020 5:23 pm

I would like to know the intervals for timing belt change both for mileage and age of vehicle. My 65 reg Vitara has the 1.6 petrol engine and is 5 years old in December of this year and has covered 16,500 miles.

I could be wrong but I thought the 1.6 used a timing chain not a timing belt?

+1, the only engine with a Belt in the Vitara/S-Cross is the Fiat Diesel unit

I take it my vitara has a chain, 1.6 all-grip petrol automatic 2018 model

I am sure Karl will correct me if I am wrong but I think all the 1.6 vitara's use the M16A engine fitted in a variety of Suzuki's.Mine although not turbo charged rev's really well and sounds nice too!

As Birch said the Petrol 1.6 is the M16A and chain drive

For future reference...

Petrol

1.0 Turbo K10C Chain Drive
1.4 Turbo K14C Chain Drive
1.6          M16A Chain Drive

Diesel

1.6 Turbo D16AA Belt Drive

Hello Karl,
I am new to this forum and I wondered if I could please ask your advice about my 2016 suzuki vitara 1.6 automatic as i am a little confused about whether my car does indeed have a chain rather than a belt as I was reading my handbook last night and it states that the drive belt should be replaced after 75000 miles or 60 months yet it is mentioned on here that my M16A engine has a chain so is my hand book universal for all suzuki engines? I would be most grateful if you could put my mind at ease as my car will be 5 years old in August 2021 and I was shocked to read that the replacement costs could be over £1000. Thank you so much. Kind regards Paul

Hi Paul

Yes the handbook covers both Petrol and Diesel models hopefully this is a huge releif

The only Vitara engine to use a belt is the 1.6 Diesel, 1.6, 1.4 and 1.0 Petrol all use chains

Anyone that does need a cam belt replacement could try a Fiat or Vauxhall specialist as the DDIS engine is also used in these models

Many thanks Karl for your very prompt reply, so I can ignore the handbook regarding the belt change recommendations so I am safe for a couple more years having a chain. You have just made my day. Thank you so much.

Your manual could be referring to any auxiliary drive belts such as for the alternator etc
