I have yet to see if it is a "Full" Hybrid or a "Mild" Hybrid as on the Ignis...

I drove an Ignis Allgrip SHVS to the Carrara Marble Mines in Italy from the UK and although it appeared to work it was an unusual setup compared to other Hybrids I have used in the past

I'm interested in this as well, and enjoyed the video of the Ignis set up thanks Karl. That is one complicated setup and reminds me a bit of the KERS system used on F1 cars where they have an extra 80bhp on tap when needed.

I'd much prefer a hybrid than full electric at the moment, best of both worlds - cheaper running costs but also the guaranteed reliability of an internal combustion engine when you need it no matter what the temp outside. With the Suzuki being all wheel drive it's likely to get use in the cold and snow and that's where the IC engine is king IMHO. The ability to heat the car from the engine and no loss of range due to cold batteries would be important to me.

We have all electric Postal vans (Nissans) where I live and you should see the range drop when they use the heaters in winter, and the batteries do age when fully depleted, even the decent LiPo's. They are getting better though - I've recently bought a Relion 35Ah battery and it gives out far more power than its rated at.

It wouldn't take much effort to add more battery capacity to the Suzuki Hybrids and the Lithium Ions are a lot lighter than conventional lead acid batteries. thumbl

I was told by dealer that it's a mild hybrid: same as the Ignis, but 15%-20% fuel saving seems a lot if that's the case.

Piece of cake, you would only need an ECU, dashboard display, BCM, alternator/motor, wiring loom and a Hybrid badge for the tailgate..........cue the A Team music lol!

VITARA HYBRID ANNOUNCED IN FINLAND Empty Re: VITARA HYBRID ANNOUNCED IN FINLAND

Some engine info from Suzuki Finland's web site about the hybrid as it differs from 1.4 Boosterjet without hybrid.

Engine code: K14D-TURBO HYBRID
Compression ratio: 10,9
Maximum output: 95 kW (129 hp) at 5500 rpm
Maximun torque: 235 Nm at 2000-3000 rpm

I'm quite disapointed on power and torque. Less power than without hybrid and max torque only at 2000-3000.

Manual hybrid weights 1275 kg which is 10 kg more than automatic without hybrid, and it's top speed is 190 km/h. No info about accelleration. CO2 emissions are 140 g/km.

1.4 Automatic (140 Boosterjet as it is called here in Finland) is still without hybrid, and they are discontinuing to sell Vitara with 1.0 Boosterjet (112 Boosterjet).

Thank you for the information Sakke, it is surprising they have added Hybrid to the K14C and not fitted a Toyota engine as the rumours suggested

Thanks again

VITARA HYBRID ANNOUNCED IN FINLAND Empty Re: VITARA HYBRID ANNOUNCED IN FINLAND

SUZUKI GB wrote: PRESS RELEASES
In line with continued plans to further reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel economy across its range of vehicles, Suzuki GB PLC is excited to introduce three 48-Volt Self-Charging Hybrid equipped derivatives to its range in Spring 2020 which will also include the launch of the new K14D Boosterjet petrol engine.

The new Hybrid Powertrain will be introduced for Swift Sport, Vitara and S-Cross models and offer up to 20 per cent lower CO2 emissions, a greater level of torque and 15 per cent overall improvement in WLTP Combined fuel consumption. These models will directly replace the current 1.4-litre Boosterjet derivatives with manual transmission.

Similar in basic principle to the 12V Hybrid SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) system that Suzuki pioneered in 2016 and fitted to all manual transmission models in the Ignis range and Swift SZ5 models, the newly developed 48V Hybrid Powertrain remains very lightweight in design and the components add less than 15kg to the overall weight of the vehicle.

The new and higher-powered Suzuki SHVS system consists of a 48V lithium-ion battery, Integrated Starter Generator (known as ISG) and 48V-12V (DC/DC) converter to power components requiring lower voltage including lights, audio and air conditioning. The ISG acts as both a generator and starter motor, is belt driven and assists the petrol engine during vehicle take off for a higher level of torque with 235Nm available from 2,000rpm.

The compact and high-performance lithium-ion battery stores electrical energy recovered from deceleration and braking and incorporates an idle stop function operated via the Integrated Starter Generator. This battery, along with the DC/DC convertor unit, are located under the front seats to assist overall weight distribution.

A further benefit of the new 48V Hybrid system is the introduction of electric motor idling when the clutch is disengaged and the engine speed is approximately 1,000rpm. This feature essentially replaces fuel injection with power from the electric motor to then control and maintain engine idling at vehicle speeds below 10mph and when stationary.

This function therefore eliminates fuel consumption under these conditions as engine momentum is electrically controlled by the ISG unit and the car is ready to re-accelerate on request with no engine restart delay.

Further detail and full specifications of the three new Hybrid models will be announced in advance of media and public launch which is planned for March 2020.

Isn't it so that the new Grand Vitara which is going to be a rebadged RAV4 Hybrid? And Corolla Wagon Hybrid is rebadged to be some other Suzuki?

I'm quite disappointed on power and torque. Less power than without hybrid and max torque only at 2000-3000.

For comparison, the K14C engine produces a maximum power of 140 PS (138 bhp - 103 kW) at 5500 rpm and a maximum torque of 220 Nm (162 lb.ft) at 1500 rpm.

So, I guess the Suzuki Hybrid formula is for less emissions from the internal combustion engine (ICE), with the associated shortfall in power made up by the Integrated Starter Generator ( ISG). OK, they're not Porsche.

Until we get a good review of real-world driving, it's hard to know how successful this will be. One thing that is puzzling, however, is the possible retirement of the 1.0 Boosterjet. Somewhere in Suzuki's future pipeline there may be plans for a full hybrid using a dedicated electric motor on one of the axles. That's where a smaller displacement ICE would work best, achieving the desired reduction in emissions whilst maintaining the overall power at the wheels.
