Roof bars Empty Roof bars

Post by mrgrimsby on Thu May 10, 2018 5:42 pm

I've read the posts about roof bars but does anyone have any that they are really happy with? I'm looking to get 2 kayaks on my roof so will buy a couple of kayak cradles to fit on to the bars total weight would be less than 70kg. Any advice gratefully received, thank you.

I ordered mine via Thule UK as they were mot 100% sure of fitment when the Vitara first come out

You will need....

Thule WingBar 961 (118cm)
Thule Rapid System 753
Thule Kit 4040

I do have a set of as new boxed wingbar 961 but you would need to buy the 753 and 4040

Rrp on the 961 is £85 but i could do the used ones £50 + uk post at cost

Bought a set of these Nordive ones but not used in anger yet. Look excellent quality. Delivered by next day. Surprisingly they are slightly cheaper through Amazon from Mick Garage than direct from their webite or their eBay website.

As I said not used yet but they Are oval rather than square. Also they are T track compatible and take 100kg which is more than many take.

I dont work for or benefit from any sales of roof bars but i would still recommend Thule
Main reason for this is having purchased lower priced roof bars in the past (even mont blanc as used by Suzuki) is the availability of spare parts should the need arise or even the cost if they are available, I had some exodus (halfords) cycle carriers that needed two plastic handles and a wheel strap, the parts alone were £5 less than a new complete cycle carrier and twice the price of equivalent Thule spare parts?

Don’t know if you have got any yet but Aldi are doing some this weekend for only £30. I am sure they will be their usual good quality. You need 120 cm ones for the S

The Aldi website says suitable for vehicles with roof rails only, the roof rails they mean are the raised type like the Jimny/SX4/Ignis/GV1600/Wagon R etc not the flush Vitara/S-Cross roof rails

The universal bars wrap/clamp around the raised roor rails

I notice in the description... DO NOT EXCEED 55mph... Is that a normal (cop out) recommendation for most roof bars ?

Looking more into the Aldi XS bars it would appear they are supplied by Maypole Ltd of Birmingham

https://www.maypole.ltd.uk/Mway-Avia-Universal-Roof-Bars?search=RB1020&description=&category_id=0&sub_category=

They are listed as fitting both the Vitara and S-Cross...

And finally the manufactures in Italy M-WAY...

So the Aldi price seems very good as the M-way ones look to retail at about £75.

Just checked Aldi website and according to reports from three customers they will not fit closed rails as per Vitara, the photo showing them fitted to closed rail car has been removed by the look of it, a pity as they looked to be a bargain, look at the reviews at the bottom of the page.

Just noticed in the description on the web page it says there must be clearance below the bars for them to fit securely , (I think they mean clearance below the roof rails not bars).

Thule do know how to charge but on the other hand check out the resale value of them used on ebay? I also have a set of Thule Aero bars i bought in 2003, over the years fitted all year round to 2 Grand Vitara's , 2 Jimny's, 1 x Ignis and now on our current Jimny and as new as the day i bought them 15 years ago with nothing more than a squirt of oil in the locks and the odd grease on the adjusters between vehicles
