Vitara S burning smell Empty Vitara S burning smell

Post by tjhmortimer on Sat Jan 13, 2018 11:50 am

Noticed recently that my wife’s Vitara S has started smelling of burning. I can’t pin point the smell, doesn’t seem to be coming from under the bonnet and nothing seems overly hot.

It’s noticeable inside the cabin if you put the front windows down.

Anyone else noticed a burning smell?

It smells similar to the DPF smell that I get from my diesel Skoda

How many miles are on it, you get it from new really, or is your wife giving it a thumping? If so, good on her.

Check nothing has melted onto the exhaust like a polythene bag you may have driven over, had it some years ago on a Subaru and took months to stop smelling

Just got the car back from its second service, they think the smell is coming from the clutch but they've said not to worry about it unless it gets worse.........

Not a brilliant response on an 18 month old car

we once had an electrical burning type smell in our Vitara in the early days during a longish road trip.

I had a genuine Tom Tom 3 way sat nav charger plugged in and had something connected to all 3 outlets. one of the USB cables was a new braided (Halfords) one. I binned that cable and have never had the smell again since.
I only use OEM or High Spec specialist USB cables now.
Just a thought...

Not a good idea to use these multiple outlet connectors. Best to restrict to maximum use of 2 out of 3, particularly if using sat nav, and a cam.

A hot clutch absolutely stinks, do you rest your foot on the clutch when driving? The clutch is hydraulic and any pressure on the pedal will be multiplied quite significantly.

I few years ago I noted a funny smell coming into the cabin. Pointed it out at the next service, but they gave it a clean bill of health. Still noted the smell, so contacted my extended warranty company who sent out an independent engineer who diagnosed a faulty EGR Cooler. (He also noted a leaking rear diff which Škoda also gave a clean bill of health to!)

If you are convinced there is an issue, either try another Suzuki dealer, or get a recognised independent mechanic to do a survey/inspection of the vehicle. That way you have peace of mind there is nothing faulty, or you have evidence to take to Suzuki for them to rectify the fault and reimburse you for the report.
