Took my vitara s for it's 2nd service the other day, not pleased with the news that my osf drive shaft oil seal is leaking oil Crying or Very sad gutted to say the least.
Booked in for it to be fixed under warranty hopefully.

Wouldn't be too downhearted seals do pop from time to time or maybe not pressed in correctly, should be child's play to a decent mechanic

Shame as it only seems to affect the Fiat based gearbox used on the Diesels and a common fault on many Fiat models using the same engine/

Does the swift use this gearbox .I ask because just reading this months copy of CAR mag and they have a swift on long term test . I quote from the mag . These other problems would be bearable but the gearbox is playing up too ,The success rate of snicking smoothly into first is waning second crunches at least half of the time and even third doesn't always play ball .

I  had a new Boosterjet swift a few weeks ago for 2 days and the box was a Suzuki not a Fiat unit
Having a family business rebuilding transmissions we always take an interest in what gearboxs are fitted and how they perform and the Swift was as smooth as the Vitara
From what you quoted i would suggest a clitch issue as the 1&2 selector fork/hub is on a totally different assembly/shaft to 3&4 selection...........and we all know press cars like rentals are the fastest on the road  (read clutch abuse)

And the vitara I test drove had a very smooth gearbox . BUT ours now on 22k still has its off days ,its been better since first service when they changed the gearbox oil , BUT should be better , PS and i can relate to most of the problems on there swift gearbox ,from day one on our vitara

The two Swift Sport 6 speed I had both had this issue on the change between 1st and 2nd. Is it the same box in the Vitara S

My oil was changed when the oil seal was done, or at least that's what I was told.
It's still not the best from 1st to 2nd  but then again the freezing weather isn't helping.
I'm hoping things improve as the weather warms up but I'm beginning to think it's just a very annoying quirk of the 6 speed box.

It sounds like the exact same problem, so I bet it is the same 6 speed box as the swift sport!

I had terrible trouble with this issue on a Fiat Sedici some years back. My Vitara is a diesel and would potentially also have this problem; but no fortunately it does not. I guess Fiat and Suzuki have addressed the problem once and for all.

As I have commented on here a few times our vitara is a 2016 diesel and the gearbox is far from being what I would expect , to put it mildly

Unfortunately dealers when trying to sell you a new Suzuki will bypass telling you the inherent problems of the Fiat diesel engine and gearbox issues which as Johnwales confirms was an issue as long back as the first SX4/Sedici.........and along with many Fiat models it still hasnt been cured 8-(
Understanding how the synchro works you can with time learn how to change smoothly (read old fashioned, agricultural and slow)

Question for Karl or anyone else please? Does the vitara s share the same gearbox with the suzuki swift sport?
As they're both 6 speed but one is 4wd and the other is 2wd... so surely it's a different gearbox....?

They visually appear the same until you reach the bell/clutch housing as the Vitara is a K14 engine and the Swift a M16A. They also have different gearbox codes that i guess may also be different ratios
The 4wd transfer box bolts onto the gearbox plugging into the o/s side of the diff

Took car to dealers this afternoon, had a test drive with service manager who said yes there is a known 1st to 2nd gear problem but at the moment no authorised fix for the petrol 6 speed from suzuki.
The so called gear oil change is only authorised for the diesel 6 speed box.
Not for the petrol at this time.....
According to suzuki it's a characteristic of the vehicle....
My next step is to make a complaint to suzuki if I can find who to contact.

There is somewhere on the forum a bulletin for the gear oil to be changed, i think Gargreen has changed his on his S and said it improved gear changes

i took my 1.4 s back to dealer for the same reason, they changed the gearbox oil and now its a lot better.

Yes I had the oil changed in the gearbox, no idea what grade was put in but I'm considering changing the oil again to some Castrol 75w Fe but worried that as this is a full synthetic oil it may be too slippery for the synchros to work ???

Before my Vitara I had a Swift Sport with the 6 speed box and had the same issue (as already said, common problem). Not really a crunch as it went into second, it just didn't feel as smooth as you would expect. I hoped it would get better with age, then kids came along and I had to get a bigger motor.
It was talked about a lot on the Swift forum.
