MILEOMETER Empty MILEOMETER

Is the speedometer linked to the distance instrument ? We all know that the speedo can over state speed by 10 %. If there is a link it would mean that the car mileage could be showing 100 miles more per thousand than it should be. A car showing a mileage of 50,000 would only really have covered 45,000; and we could be spending too much on servicing by visiting the dealer 1250 miles early !!!

I believe there is a speed sensor in the gear box that counts this.

While on this subject, I have noticed that there is approx a 4 mph difference in the speedo and the digital cruise control read out at 70 mph. So if the speedo is 10% out is the digital readout accurate or is there a 10% error in that as well. If that is the case which one is closer to the truth. Just saying!

Interesting point Tall Bloke. I always set my cruise control against the Tom Tom read out; little chance of being any problems there !!

By law speedos are not permitted to over read, so they have to err on the side of caution. GPS readings are pretty accurate.

So does that mean the digital cruise control readout is more accurate than the speedo?

I would have thought the digital c.c. readout is linked to the speedo ?

Don't be certain. In my old S Cross the time on the dashboard clock gradually departed by minutes from the one on the satnav, and they weren't linked anywhere.
I doubt that the clock (lovely) on the dash of the Vitara is liked to the digital clock, although I haven't noticed a disparity yet so I might be wrong. And I bet the CC speed sensor isn't linked to the speedo either.
Don't forget, no speedo can't be true because by law they must not over read, so all manufacturers incorporate a few mph over read.
Does the satnav show speed, I'm not sure that it does, unlike the excellent Garmin in the old S Cross? Satnavs are pretty accurate way of checking other readouts.

To adjust the analogue clock in the dash it is synchronised when adjusting the LCD clock in the speedo

While the cc doesn't show current speed it does show the set speed. I will check it against Waze next time I do some motorway miles as waze gives a reading.

Seems to me that the Vitara has so many technical accessories that after 3 years maintenance and repairs are going to be a minefield !!

Don't worry. It's only a car. I'm too old to worry about the tech to the nth degree. If it goes and drives well I'm happy. But, when the clever tech fails to deliver I get angry ...
