Good news and bad news!

Good news (1) - The bargain E-Bay Spacesaver I purchased works and is the correct size.
Good news (2) - The TPMs system works as advertised.

Bad news (1) - Returning from holiday the TPMS warned me of low tyre pressure just as I got to the M4 junction of the M25. Stopped at Service Station and found large screw in rear nearside tyre. Inflated to near 40 psi and continued carefully stopping at each Service Station to check and reinflate.

Bad news (2) - The puncture was in an area that was not repairable. Replacement as original was £131 including all the extras that get added on. Not too bad for my local garage, although it took them 2 days to find the right spec tyre. If I'd realised there would be this delay I would have used Blackcircles who were quoting £112 for the same tyre fitted at the same garage.

The car really does look very silly with a Spacesaver fitted!

Great to hear the spacesaver was all good but sorry you had to use use it, typical the tyre was unrepairable as I doubt you had got much wear out of it

Got a spare wheel but I would like one of the polystyrene inserts to hold the jack and tools.
Does anyone know the part number so that I can order one.

SPACE SAVER TEMPORARY TYRE SPECS - Page 2 Empty Re: SPACE SAVER TEMPORARY TYRE SPECS

Post by Petrust on Fri Feb 10, 2017 3:02 pm

When I bought my 1.4S last year, at the time I asked the dealer about a spacesaver spare for the vehicle, but was told "they were on back-order" and would cost "about £300" !  So instead I did some quick research on ebay and acquired a new wheel & tyre which was claimed suitable for an LY Vitara with 17" wheels. It fitted perfectly in the boot well, and there it has remained undisturbed since purchase.
I have today been reading this thread, in particular the reference to the importance of using the correct space saver (135/90D16) to avoid transmission wind-up. I have just checked the spare that I have and am a bit miffed to see it's 145/70 17. Sad
The standard 215/55R17 fitted to the car is 668mm diameter, the official Suzuki 135/90R16 spare is 649mm diameter (i.e a difference of 19mm), and the 145/70 17 spare in my car is 635mm diameter (i.e a difference of 33mm).
Given that a difference of 19mm is deemed acceptable, can anyone offer an opinion as to whether 33mm is also within a safe tolerance?
Other than replacing mine with the correct 16" space saver wheel & tyre, my other option is to replace just the tyre with a 135/90 17, which gives a diameter of 675mm, 7mm more than the standard tyre.

On an Allgrip model I would say 33mm is a big difference and likely to create issues with the 4wd having to compensate as it is a 4.94% difference in overall diameter (135/90R16 2.7%)

This site recommends a tyre change of +/- 2.5% and I guess on a 2wd vehicle let alone 4wd...

Thanks for your input on this Karl, and the useful link to the etyres webpage for comparing tyre sizes.

I have in the meantime discussed my situation with a local specialist 4x4 tyre supplier, who agreed a 33mm difference in diameter was excessive and could possibly cause transmission wind-up. To resolve this, I have had fitted a Conti 135/90R17 spacesaver which is 6.5mm greater in overall diameter than the standard tyre, a difference of less than 1%.

Glad to hear you got something sorted Petrust, I rebuild transmissions in a family business and trying to explain to a customer the possible issues with odd or uneven tyre sizes often leaves you with a customer walking away thinking that you are talking bull, bottom line is a set of or the correct size tyre is certainly cheaper than a transmission rebuild

I look after a tyre to my spare wheel. I have bought a Mazda spare wheel. 4x16 "5x114.3 et50
I can see that this topic recommends a 135 / 90-16 with a 2.7% difference. but I'm thinking about buying a 145 / 90-16 because it has 0% in difference.
Is it much better to do that?

The tyre size posted is that recomended by Suzuki so is probably a compromise between the 16" and 17" full size tyres rather than two different sizes to fit each

I do not understand why suzuki decided a tire that is 2.3% and 2.7% less than standard wheels. I have ordered a 145/90-16 tire for my spare wheel. because it is the same diameter as my standard wheel

SPACE SAVER TEMPORARY TYRE SPECS - Page 2 Empty Space saver size??.

Post by Longshanks on Tue Sep 11, 2018 6:42 pm

Hi guys, I have Vitara Allgrip (2016). My tyres are 215/55R 17. I have the opportunity to buy a 125/70R17 space saver, will this be OK, or do I need a 16" rim as someone has suggested. Am finding it difficult to get information, the handbook useless!.
Thanks in advance,
David.

There is no problem with the 17" rim. But the outer diameter of the tyre is too small.
If you use tyre size calc you can see that recommended 135/90-16 is 2.7% smaller than 215/55-17. That probably is ok.
125/70-17 is 9.1% smaller than 215/55-17. That is too small.

Try eBay for a Fiat Sedici space saver spare, this is the correct tyre and size especially for to keep the Allgrip system happy

Hi

I have been looking for a space saver for my 2015 Vitara standard SZT and have been offer for free a Hyundai space saver but the only info I can find on the space saver is T125/70R18.

The car the space saver coming from has 17inch Alloys fitted so was woundering if anyone knows/ thinks this will fit.
