Vitara Service Requirements - Years 1 - 3 Empty Re: Vitara Service Requirements - Years 1 - 3

The oil is interesting, recommended for 1.6 petrol 0w 20. This stuff is found in race engines and high power go carts. Any oil boffins out there who can shoot me down? Personally I would prefer 5w 30 which is also on the recommended list so should be fine for warranty purposes. Just remember Louis Hamilton's Merc, exploded using super thin oil, which they have replaced with less extreme motor oil. Probably found an old gallon of GTX knocking around in the back of the garage. Of course creeping around in my Vitara isn't quite the same as an F1 but you never Know when I might use the sport option.

Thanks Gargreen,
But what is on the list given to the technician that he has to do and then tick the box so that the customer can see what he has done.
All my previous cars have had a copy of the service schedule in the hand book but I cannot find one for the "S".

just a bit of info for you ,the Vitara S turbo engine runs on 5w30 engine oil not the 0w20 that the 1600 runs on.

Our 1.6 is in for the first 12.5k service soon but needs an oil top up as level is down a bit. I have checked on the castrol website and they have 5w/30 or 5w/40 as the oil for the car! I was wondering why if Suzuki states 0w/20! Is it that the very thin oil gives better fuel economy? I am tempted to top it up with the cheaper "thicker" stuff and ask at the service for what they actually use. Any suggestions? Question

A litre of 0w20 is around £12 from Suzuki and quite difficult to find other than Toyota or Honda dealers it seems, Halfords and similar seem not to stock it and if they did it would be similar money for a litre bottle
As you say it is for economy more than anything

You can sometimes reset the light through the clocks on the petrols of its activated but if it's a deisel you'll need a decent obd tool not just a obd reader

Hi Gar Green

I take it the 1.4S spark plugs (Spark Plug - 09482-00602-000 x4 from the list) can't be Iridiums as surely they would last longer than 3 years? Do you know if Iridiums are available for the Vitara S or is it better to replace the standard ones every 3 years so they don't get stuck in the alloy head?

Aside from that, my Vitara S recently went in to the local dealership for its third year service (the call it a 'Major Service') and had everything done on the list you posted up apart from the spark plugs, I'm guessing they didn't replace the as the car has only done 10k miles.

I may get 4 spare plugs myself and ask they be fitted next service - I'd prefer the dealership to do what Suzuki recommend, not what they decide themselves!

They’re not iridium no, they are iridium, they’re actually NGK ILZKR7D8 so I assume there would be an equivalent but I’d rather stay with what’s recommended.

I agree, there may be a reason Suzuki don't recommend the Iridium so I'll stick with the standard ones. Thanks Very Happy

It is easy to misinterprete what plugs Suzuki use as they do tend to replace them more regular than other manufacturers
The main reason for extended service intervals (Inc spark plug changes) is to keep accountants happy with company car users, the less servicing required entices people into thinking it's cheaper motoring, personally i prefer to change oil/filters/plugs more regularly rather than run them to end of lifespan

Ah I see, that makes sense. I also personally prefer to change plugs out regularily as you've mentioned, heard horror stories where plugs haven't been swapped out for years, becoming fused in and snapping when attempting to change. I had this on a 10 year old Toyota I bought, plugs hadn't been swapped out from new and they were very difficult to remove. Ended up using penetrating oil (and a lot of swearing) but just got them out in the end, others on that forum weren't so lucky.

Is it an easy job on the Vitaras, might give it a go myself. Only had a brief look under the bonnet and there's a big plastic cover....?

Thanks guys.

Having had a few issues with European supplied NGK's (made in France) I tend to now only fit Denso plugs, the Denso Iridium Tough plugs I fitted to our Jimny at 20k were a noticeable improvement

I have yet to change any on a K14 but  usually replacement is straight forward, remove the plastic engine cover, remove 10mm headed bolts on the igniter packs, & remove , remove plug caps and remove spark plugs
Refitting I would recommend using a torque wrench to avoid any issues and ease of future replacements

The Denso equivalent is VXUHC22G but not sure what prices they are
