Vitara did fine. It was the cheapest car in the test. It had the best heater (tested cold start, city driving case + road driving case), it was the second fastest of all (Audi was bit faster) on two different races, snowy track on ice and uphill curvy road. The steering was superb on curvy roads and sporty driving, but bit anxious on the road driving straight.

I`ll translate the synopsis of the results here. Please ask if you have something in particular in mind. Too much work to translate everything.

Suzuki Vitara 1,4 Boosterjet 4WD S 6MT

Vitara is the cheapest car on our test, even with the new powerful turbo engine we were able to get for the test. Suzuki is not only lightest to your wallet in this group, but also much lighter than the second lightest (for an amout of  a grown man) and 800kg lighter than the heaviest car. Surely for this reason Vitara is fast on the track and weak on towing test. The best single result Suzuki got for its heating capabilities.

PROS

- heating
- lightweight for an awd

CONS

- restless when driving on the road
- quite long breaking distances

**** four stars out of five, 8,4/10 school number

For the breaking, there were three (F.E Audi and Mercedes on snow) cars worse and the differences were small. So in my opinion the steering is the only negative thing they could find.

Do you know if the videos from the trials are available anywhere? That would be interesting to see.

All the video material available is on this channel, on topic "Talviauto 2016". This is a new clip. There is material available from the previous winters too (2wds).

Thanks! How did the Vitara come in the ranking?
Surprised it didn't come in the top 6! here in the west coast of Norway with temp at sea level around 0 to -7c to the mountains -30c my car has performed very well.
I find the worst conditions are at around -2 to 0c, at -11 to -30c the snow ice gives a good grip and can be compared with summer driving, I am using Nokia Hakkapeliitta R2 225/60r16.

This is the matrix for final results. There were many cars around 8,5 points/10. You have to remember that the test score does not tell everything. For example the Volvo that came 3rd did not start in -30c without help Very Happy Vitara had issues on the towing task, thats why it did not receive so good grade from the awd test etc.

Painoarvo (%) means "weight", ratio in the total score.
Talviajo maantiellä = Winter drive on the road.  (They did not like Suzukis steering...)
Hallittavuus = Maneuverability (quick turns etc.)
Jarrut = Breaks
Etenemiskyky = the drive/traction on snow, basically the awd points
Lämmityslaite = the heater
Sähkölämmittimet = eletric heaters (bench, mirrors....)
Valot ja näkeminen = Lights and visibility

Thanks again for the Translation mrfinland really informative but I think the one major thing missed in the comparison is the "hinta" (That's price in Finish  Very Happy ) Looking at some of the vehicles in the test they are far more expensive than the Suzuki

Did anyone else notice as well as the Grey Turbo S Vitara there was also an Orange one in the towing tests...

I agree about the steering, in corners on a twisty road its okay but in a straight line its vague, very slight movements with the steering wheel will change the direction of the car more than expected.
I have got familiar with it now but I agree the steering in my opinion is the worst thing about driving the car, it's not bad but takes some getting used to.
I think the issues on the towing test maybe due to the low weight of the Vitara, Iv'e had no problems with traction even on wet ice.
Thanks again!

Your welcome Bjorn! Agree on the steering. They said also it is the weight of Vitara that made probably the difference on towing. The traction is superb from my experience. I'll post the "sub-results" of awd test later as they tested many things.

I agree with steering in a straight line being a bit wandering. I tow my trailer up to 500kg load no problem though.Not on snow and ice though.

The BMW got same points. You could get two Vitaras on that price. Vitara beat the Land Rover on the ice and snow track race :=)

So definately Suzuki has the best price ratio IMO.

Glad the Vitara beat the Land Rover!

I almost bought a new Evoque last year, then later I tried the Vitara and found it a lot better for the use I have.
I liked the 6 speed auto in the Vitara better than the 9 speed in the Evoque although the Evoque had a very low (nice) 1st gear which would be very useful offroad.
In the Vitara there is a mechanical park brake and it is simple to put into N from P if you don't have battery, in the Evoque to release the park brake and put it into N is much more difficult without battery power, simple is best.
Here in Norway the Vitara is less than half the price of the Evoque.

Couple of comments from the testers. In  my opinion this meant worse grades from Suzuki.
They had MT on Suzuki and Renault at least and they had issues accelerating on snow with clutch, although they were professionals. They also said the DSG did not work that well. The AT cars with "momentum system" worked well. I have AT on my Vitara so I don`t regoznise the issues they had with MT. Too bad they had the MT. They also told they made tests with rollers but did not tell how each car did. There are videos on youtube where Vitara is excellent on rollers tests. I guess Vitara is really sporty as I said. It beat every other car than Audi on track and got excellent review on the traction acceleration test. Thats why I don`t understand how it was not among the fastest on the 0-60kmh test. EDIT: Oh, it is the MT.....

Etenemiskyky = ability go forward Very Happy aka traction, drive - how the awd works alltogether.
Vetokyky lumiseen ylämäkeen = towing ability, snowy uphill
Kitkaerokiihdytys = acceleration, wheels on surfaces with different traction ( I guess on two "lanes", snow and asphalt)
Luistonrajoitusjärjestelmän toiminta = how well the traction control system works
EDS = you guess Smile
Hill assist yes or no kyllä means yes
Maavara tyhjänä = ground clearance when empty
Ajonvakautus kytkettävissä pois = can you set off the "ESP"
Luistonrajoitus kytkettävissä pois = can you se off the TCS
ESC/TCS poiskytkentä = How do you set off the ESC/TCS napista is button valikosta is from menu
EDS works while traction control is set off kyllä/yes ei/no

erinomainen = superb
kiitettävä = excellent
hyvä = good
tyydyttävä satisfying
välttävä = tolerable
ala-arvoinen=poor

I really like the auto, I have not had any problem pulling away and accelerating when it is ice.

The only problem I've had winter driving (so far) is in new snow about 25-30cm, the car will push the snow upfront and if going fast enough the car will mount the snow that has piled up in front and I've ended up with all 4 wheels in the air.

What is a "momentum system"?
