I have a 2016 Vitara S and I have got an intermittent problem. I put the clutch down and press the start button but it doesn't start i get a yellow key on the dashboard as well as a yellow triangle and it says service start press brake pedal. When I do this it starts. I only do short journeys so don't know if it anything to do with the battery.

The spare key battery fob in my 2015 1.6 diesel failed earlier in the year, probably due to lack of use, so I took the oportunity of replacing both fob bstteries.

We had this a few months ago, it's an auto.
One or two possible reasons for it:
Not following proper procedure when parking, select Park - handbrake fully ON - don't allow the car to rock backward or forward at all - it locks the autobox.
When parking the car - keep steering wheel in central position - then turn ignition off, this prevents having to shuffle steering wheel before restarting.

It only ever happened when my partner used the car, so no personal experience of it.

It would be interesting to know the technical reasons for the service start procedures. Also are there any fault codes in the memory.

I've also just had this SERVICE START SYSTEM crop up. No apparent fault other than one of the key fobs had a low battery a few weeks ago, I replaced the battery and no issues since. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of clues on the internet other than general pointers to an electrical issue.

I'm wondering if I should invest in a decent ODB2 reader (I have one that I bought about 5 years ago and it's found no codes), or if I should just give up and take it to the dealer...
